DEFORESTATION IN KYRGYZSTAN
Kyrgyzstan is a small mountainous nation located in the heart of Central Asia. In the last few decades, the political instability and deforestation have been a significant issue for the country with negative consequences for the environment, biodiversity and local communities, whose livelihood depends on the land.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has estimated in its report “The State of the World’s Forests” that the global forest area has decreased by 178 million hectares between 1990 and 2020. Silviculture, illegal logging, insufficient natural regeneration, lack of funds and years of deforestation have left very few resources to local communities. Progressive desertification on the mountainous area has increased by 31% in the last 50 years. With a decrease in the country’s green areas, the Kyrgyz population has witnessed a rapid increase in social unrest.
To address this problem, Farotti SRL has taken on an ambitious project of reforestation, which aims at restoring degraded areas and creating new woodland areas. The Naturally Kyrgyz project focuses mainly on the country’s mountainous areas and involves planting trees in collaboration with public institutions, farmers, breeders, students and researchers.
THE GOALS OF THE "NATURALLY KYRGYZ" PROJECT
One of the main challenges is guaranteeing that the new forests will be managed in a sustainable way. For this reason, Naturally Kyrgyz has been developed in close collaboration with Kyrgyz institutions in order to actively involve local communities in the management of new woodland areas. In doing so, we hope to create greater awareness of forests’ value in the preservation of the environment and in the food security and livelihood of local communities.
The reforestation project in Kyrgyzstan represents an essential step forward in the battle against deforestation and desertification in Central Asia. We hope that, thanks to the project, the new woodland areas will be able to restore environmental balance and improve the living conditions of the population. Reforestation represents an essential commitment towards our planet, as trees are able to absorb carbon dioxide from the air and help fight climate change.
Furthermore, tree repopulation in exploited areas can also improve air quality, water, and wildlife, creating a healthier environment for people and increasing biodiversity.
The project also aims at increasing the number of bees through the creation of new beehives, which could have a positive impact on agriculture and the long-term development of local flora. The project will also create job opportunities for the people involved and we hope that it will contribute to the maintenance and growth of the environmentalist culture in the area.
The Naturally Kyrgyz project is an example of how action and dedication can make a difference to the environment and local communities. We are anxious to see the short-term and long-term results of this project and we hope that it will be taken as an example for similar projects all over the world. A SMALL GESTURE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Farotti S.r.l. supports the #NaturallyKyrgyz project by planting a thousand trees to create a forest with mixed vegetation that is also coherent with the local habitat. In addition, the company is committed to allocating a portion of the profit from the starter and pro Kit Essentiarum® to the project.
The Kyrgyz government has awarded Farotti S.r.l. a commendation for its dedication and the resources invested in the project. We have received a letter of thanks sent directly from the Department of Forestry of the Kyrgyz Republic’s Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, the company will be updated on the project through video conferences with the local team and it will have the chance to actually go there and witness the tree planting.
However, taking part in the project is not the only contribution that can be made. Sharing this kind of project might be even more important. The financial investment in this reforestation project with a high environmental and global impact is only part of the contribution that Farotti S.r.l. wants to make.
